V Intro
* It's Friday, 26th May 2006 and you're listening to the EuroMac Podcast

V Theme

* Hi, This is Don McAllister and welcome to another edition of the EuroMac podcast.

V Opening Comments
* The EuroMac Podcast is a free weekly audio podcast which covers news, technology and features connected with Apple and the mac from a European perspective.

* So on with the news

V Misc News

* MacBook Pro 17"
* Thanks to all the EuroMac listeners who sent in a reply for my request last week to find out how to make the menu bar on my new MacBook Pro appear on an attached Cinema Display. It transpires that it's just a matter of going into the System Preferences Display Pane and dragging the representation of the menubar from one screen to another. How easy is that!

Also, can I just say thanks to Andreas Pfaffling for pointing me in the direction of Teleport by abyssoft. It's a free utility that enables you to control multiple macs from a single mouse and keyboard. It's really easy to set up and now I can move my cursor between both the PowerMAc G5 and the MacBook pro in a single action. You can also copy and paste between machines - excellent find.-

An by the way, it's true what they say, don't use a MacBook Pro on your lap, it can get seriously, seriously hot!

* Free Software
* MAcworld UK Architecture students are being offered a free copy of the industry standard architectural design application, ArchiCAD.

The free deal is available through the Apple website, which explains: "Now the power of ArchiCAD is accessible to all architecture students, for free. Simply download the software, and you will receive a serial number, good for a month of use. Then, after submitting proof of student status, you will receive a serial number valid for a year."

Apple has consistently applied itself to the architecture market in its attempt to boost new markets for its products.

"Fully equipped with the latest communication tools and technologies, and widely used by both education institutions and professional architects, the Mac is the ideal platform for architecture students." the company explains.

Among its many advantages, ArchiCAD offers a Virtual Building feature which allows architects to conceptualise the building in all its dimensions within a data-rich 3D simulation.

Apple calls the application: "one of the most efficient tools for producing traditional plans and elevations."

The company also draws a parallel between its award-winning engineers and product designers and the work architects do: "Apple's designers and engineers agonise over every millimetre of every new Mac and every pixel of the user interface. Our pursuit of efficiency through functionality and simplicity mirrors qualities that architects value highly in their own work."

* Apple Still In 'Early Stages' Of IPod Expansion
* Credit Suisse maintained an "outperform" rating on Apple Computer despite what the firm sees as increasing concerns regarding the future growth of the popular iPod music and video players.

"We believe Apple is still in the early stages of its product expansion and that the company can grow its iPod units at least 20% for the foreseeable future," wrote analyst Robert Semple, in report sent to clients Tuesday.

The analyst's prediction comes from what he sees as the low penetration rate of the iPod, estimated at about 10% of PC users, or an "active installed base" of about 40 million units worldwide.

One region looking ripe for growth is Europe, which has an estimated penetration rate of 7.1% compared with 15.5% for the United States, according to Credit Suisse.

"Europe remains the biggest opportunity for Apple, in our opinion, based on its penetration rate of only 7.1% and similar demographics and buying patterns to the U.S.," he said.

"However, the company has only demonstrated a moderate inclination to compete in the region, having opened only six retail stores in the U.K. and nowhere else in the region, choosing instead to leverage reseller partners."

* Apple Store in France
* According to the France-based Web site MacGeneration, Apple V-P Europe Pascal Cagni has sent e-mail to authorised resellers outlining new contract conditions effective Oct. 30th that seem to set the stage for Apple’s own retail stores in the country. Essentially, Apple will no longer license the term “Apple Center,” but would call them “Premium Providers.” In addition, the use of the word “Apple” or “Mac” will be nearly eliminated for resellers, and a look-alike interior design isn’t required (or perhaps permitted). MacGeneration also states Apple has near-term plans for a store in the Opera district of the city, just north of the Champs Elysees, and home to the large Printemps department store. Plans for a store along the Champs Elysees itself have been known for almost two years. A International Herald Tribune story suggests French politics may delay a Champs Elysees store, while the HardMac site has details on the actual e-mail.

* Steve Harris - Re-invented Software
* While we're on the subject of European Software Developers, checkout this weeks CocoaRadio Interview with Steve Harris of Re-Invented Software. Steve is the developer of Feeder which is the premier application for generating and managing RSS feeds on the Mac. I'm a big fan of Feeder and use it constantly to manage the multiple RSS feeds for both ScreenCastsOnline and EuroMac podcasts. At the last count I've got about eight different RSS feeds all supplying different versions and resolutions of shows and I really couldn't hack it without Feeder! Even if you haven't got a podcast, Feeder is great for creating RSS feeds for your website or blog.

I met Steve at the UK Podcasters meetup a few weeks ago and he's a good guy so check out the interview and stop by the Re-Invented Software website.
