V Intro
* It's Friday, 19th May 2006 and you're listening to the EuroMac Podcast

V Theme

* Hi, This is Don McAllister and welcome to another edition of the EuroMac podcast.

V Opening Comments
* The EuroMac Podcast is a free weekly audio podcast which covers news, technology and features connected with Apple and the mac from a European perspective.

* The main news this week has been the launch of the macbook and also the launch of the flagship Apple store in New York. Neither have a European focus but I had a few complaints the last time some major news happened and I didn't mention it on the EuroMac podcast so I'll include some references in the show. This week I also have another interview, this time with Mark Howson from theMacNurse website - a website dedicated to offering free mac support via email and live chat with volunteers.

* So on with the news

V Misc News

* MacBook Pro 17"
* Well it finally arrived and I have to say it's a bit of a monster! It was delivered the same day as the launched the macbook but I'm still glad I went for the pro version. The screen is gorgeous but you do need to have fairly good eyesight to use it. I eventually went for a maxed out MacBook Pro so that I can do video and screencast production on the road. I installed the Universal binary version of Final Cut Studio and it works just fine. I also ordered a plexiglas silhouette stand from case-mate.net which arrived just a day later. $34.99 or £18 or 28 euros is a bit steep for three bits of plastic but it does the job and does seem to make it easier to handle on the desktop.

One issue I do have is how to ruse it in conjunction with my PowerMac G5 and the 23" Cinema Display and I haven't quite decided on the optimum configuration. I've tried using the cinema display plugged directly into the laptop and that looks great. The only problem is then accessing the PowerMac so I've tried using Apple Remote Desktop from the laptop but it's not been completely successful but does work in a fashion. By the way, if there is a way to use the Cinema display as the primary display for the laptop can you let me know. By the primary display I mean having the Menu bar across the top of the cinema display rather than the macbook pro.

I also might try out an open source piece of software called synergy to leave each machine separate but use a single keyboard and mouse to access both machines.

I've not tried BootCamp yet and I've ordered a copy of Parallels to try virtualisation on the MacBook pro. If you want to see how I get one with BootCamp and parallels I suggest you checkout next weeks ScreenCastsOnline show where you can follow my bootcamp and parallels install in high definition (if you're an Extra! member). I did see another BootCamp video on the internet but it was pretty poor quality so hopefully I can better that. Suffice to say I'll be trying a little experiment

* New MacBook
V So while we're on the subject of Apple hardware, I suppose everyone is up to speed on this week release of the MAcBook. I've seen lots of postings on the web and plenty of flickr unwrapping photos but I've yet to see one in the flesh!. I do think that they've priced them pretty competitively considering the high spec of the machines with the Intel Core Duo, the isight, bluetooth and wireless included, gigabit ethernet and digital audio. Delivery from the UL apple store is showing 3-5 days for the white models and 5-7 for the black. I think the jury is out on the rather high price differential on the Black model but if people are willing to pay a premium price for the black model (and I think some will) you can't fault Apple as they're in business to make money.

I noticed as well a video on the internet showing how to upgrade the memory an the hard drive - it looks really easy.

One final point, the scrolling trackpad on both the MacBook Pro and the MacBook are superb. One of the issues I thought I'd have is the absence of a right mouse button on the trackpad. I tend to use extensive use of the right click. Well, the trackpad has a really smart feature you can switch on whereby if you tap the trackpad with two fingers, it triggers a right click or ctrl click. The two fingered scrolling is also really neat in that if you're in an application with scroll bars just drag up or down or left or right with two fingers and the application scrolls. I love it!

* Apple Store in New York
* I'm actually recording this round about the time that the store is due to open on Fifth Avenue in New York. You may have seen the photos and the glass cube looks absolutely stunning especially when lit up at night. I fully expect this to become a Mecca for all Apple fans visiting New York. Perhaps it really is the Big Apple now! Checking on the ScreenCastsOnline and EuroMac forums it looks like one of our regular ScreenCastsOnline viewers who lives in New York has gone over to see if he can get in. That's mackid805 and I'm sure he'll be posting a report on the forums so check them out. Links in the shownotes and podcast as usual.

V And Finally
> BBC news is reporting that Ofcom has said it is working with other regulators to draft an EU-wide standard on the use of a gadget which plays the output of Apple's iPods on FM radios.
Using an iTrip is banned in Britain as its low-power transmissions can, in theory, interfere with legal stations.

However, the device and other similar accessories for MP3 players are widely available to purchase online.

The have said Ofcom "must provide compelling evidence" to explain why they remain outlawed.

The Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1949 forbids the use of radio equipment without a licence or an exemption.

However, the Liberal Democrats shadow culture secretary Don Foster said it was "ridiculous that 1940s legislation is preventing the iPod generation from enjoying their music using the latest gadgets".

He added: "iTrips can be used in the US without disturbing the airwaves, so [Ofcom] must provide compelling evidence why they can't be used here.

It is believed that Ofcom could announce progress on the issue before the end of this year.
